According to Ken Belding, chairman of the Vent-Free Gas Products Alliance Code Standards Committee, moisture created by overuse of vent-free appliances is a long-term, potentially hazardous situation. Belding estimated the moisture given off by vent-free appliances at one ounce per 1000 Btu or between three-fourths and one gallon per 100,000 Btu.

According to Belding, climate is more of a factor in causing a moisture problem than construction, aside from the fact that a more loosely-constructed house will likely use more heat and thus create more moisture. In colder climates, such as in the Midwest and the Northeast, cold streaks are more extended and a vent-free heater is more likely to be overused. "The last thing they need to do is put vent-free in for primary heat," he said.

Air circulation is a key component in preventing a moisture problem, Belding added. Belding, who is national sales manager for Empire Comfort Systems (Belleville, Ill.), said the blowers sold for use with vent-free appliances might not provide ample air circulation. "Take that money you would spend on a blower and put it into a ceiling fan."
