   TIM BELCHER TO JOIN SPIRIT COACHING STAFF

   Belcher has been a coach for the past three years at his alma mater, Quinnipiac College. In each of the last two seasons, he has coached third base and been a key influence for the Braves hitters.
   
   The resident of Hamden is most famous for making national headlines in 1997 when he launched an NCAA record five grand slams in leading Quinnipiac to its first Northeast League-10 championship in nine years.
   
   In his first three seasons with the Spirit, Belcher hit .266 (134-503) with 2 HR and 57 RBI in 177 games. He will work with the hitters and outfielders.
   
   The Spirit open the 2000 season in less than a week, starting with a six-game road trip on May 26 at Elmira. The team returns to Municipal Stadium for its home opener on Friday, June 2, also against Elmira, at 7 : 05 p.m. Tickets are available by calling the Spirit at (203) 419-0393, stopping by the Municipal Stadium office or visiting the team on the web at www.waterburyspirit.com.
   
   SPIRIT NOTES – The Mayor's Office is the latest organization to announce its participation in Jeff Keaveney/Survivor's Day as part of the opening home weekend, Sunday, June 4 at 5 : 05 p.m. The Spirit Booster club is spearheading plans to honor Keaveney, along with others who have overcome difficult medical battles, during a pre-game ceremony. Keaveney suffered a season-ending head injury a year ago when he was struck in the head with a broken bat while playing first base in a game in Allentown, PA...First baseman Rafael Martinez should join the team sometime next week. Martinez, who is a native of the Dominican Republic, has been waiting for his visa application to be approved before he can come to the United States.
