"We're not trying to start a price war," Ted Belcher, president of Wyndall's Enterprises, said Wednesday.
    ...
Belcher said Wyndall's fuel centers will keep their prices 2 cents a gallon lower than most gas stations in town. The center on Kentucky 54 was selling regular gas Tuesday for $1.70 a gallon.

But customers can get discounts based on how much they spend at Foodland. A $25 purchase qualifies a shopper for a 5-cent discount on gas.

"If you spend $200 on groceries, you can get 30 cents off each gallon up to 15 gallons," Belcher said. "That lowers your price to $1.40 a gallon."

The discounts are good for up to 30 days and can be accumulated, he said.

Belcher estimates that 50 to 60 percent of the customers who shop at the Kentucky 54 store -- "it would be in the thousands," he said -- take advantage of the gasoline discounts.

"Our grocery sales are absolutely up since we opened the fuel center," Belcher said.

Belcher said the fuel center at the 25th Street store should be open in about 30 days.

Construction of the fuel center on Scherm Road should start in a month or two, Belcher said. He has to resolve some parking issues there before construction begins.

Belcher said Wyndall's is refining its discount program to include gas discounts on certain individual items. "You might buy a box of Cheerios and get 10 cents off a gallon of gas," he said.
