Gregory Alan Belcher, 27, and Maurice Sellers, 25, will join 86 other officers as patrolmen.

Belcher was born and raised in Abington, Mass.A 1993 graduate of Abington High School, he played basketball and was captain of the track team while enrolled.He then went on to Bridgewater State College, where he received a bachelor's degree in sociology with a concentration in criminology.

Before joining the Newport police, Belcher worked for Pinkerton Security as the security director for the Lafayette Corporate Center in downtown Boston and later managed a security program for Citizens Bank.

In July 2001 he married Alison Subin, daughter of Capt. Joseph Subin (Newport police, retired).Belcher is a recent graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Academy.
