Jens Mueller-Belau of Shell, a Top Tier brand, said the gas industry polices itself effectively, and that the auto makers test gasolines to ensure their vehicles don't get blamed for problems that low-quality gas might cause.

The impetus to conduct these tests objectively is the fact the companies' reputations are on the line, Mueller-Belau said.

"We do a lot of testing, and we believe there is a difference in products," he said."I'm not aware of any independent way of looking at that; the industry regulates it."

Mueller-Belau said Shell hired an independent lab to do tests that concluded Shell gas keeps engines cleaner than other, unspecified brands -- the source of the marketing campaign featuring the dirty valve depicted in today's photo. But he would not identify the lab, and said officials there would not provide the Warrior with information anyway.

Base gasoline is pretty much the same within octane grades, but the type and amount of additives make all the difference, Mueller-Belau said.Shell's regular and mid-grade gas has more than twice the required cleaning agents; its high-test has more than five times as much, he said.
