Sally Belangia, chief executive of the Oriental, branch of First Citizens Bank and noted Pamlico County civic leader, sends a message loud and clear about her alma mater, "I love Pamlico Community College." Belangia, like so many graduates of the local community college, credits the school for preparing her for upward mobility in her chosen career.
That career is interwoven with success in the academic, business and civic arena. She now holds a bachelor's degree in business administration and a master's in business management.
Belangia says she would have never been able to enroll at Mount Olive College for her bachelor's degree had it not been for the confidence she gained while attending the small classes at Pamlico Community College.

Hard work is no stranger to Belangia. She worked as a waitress at night at The Trawl Door restaurant in Oriental while attending PCC classes during the day. When she became a bank teller, she reversed that situation by working days and attending school at night. Once the course work for her degree at PCC was finished, Belangia's career at the bank was launched on a continuing upward spiral.
After a tenure at First Citizens in Oriental as a teller, Belangia was promoted to be an Operations Supervisor at the Bayboro branch of the bank. That was followed by a promotion to Branch Manager I in the Arapahoe First Citizens office. From there, she was promoted to be a Financial Services Representative in Bayboro with increased responsibility as a loan officer. In 1998, Sally Belangia's career dreams were realized when she was promoted to Branch Manager II and sent back to her native Oriental.
Along the way, with husband Ken, Belangia found time to rear two children, Clint and Amber. Being a full-time, working mom in no way impaired Belangia's emerging role as a civic leader. She has served stints as president for both the Oriental Rotary Club and the Pamlico County Chamber of Commerce.
She has been a part of many projects for these organizations, even serving one year as director of the Oriental Rotary Tarpon Tournament. First Citizens Bank zipped her off to Pinehurst, North Carolina's premier golf resort community, in 2004 to award her the First Citizens Bank Community Involvement Award. In 2005, she was honored as being a Paul Harris Fellow, the highest award of achievement for members of Rotary Clubs.
Joan Delamar Gracie, vice-president of Instructional Services at PCC, first met Sally Belangia shortly after moving to Oriental in 1982.

"Sally brings many strengths to our county, to her employer, and to Pamlico Community College, not the least of which is her ability to bridge the old with the new, helping our county retain the history of our past, while embracing some of the changes that can improve lives.
She contributed to this college as a student, but that was just the beginning. She continues to contribute as a graduate and as a member of our foundation board," said Gracie.
Belangia's support for Pamlico Community College is steadfast. "I take offense when people say negative things about Pamlico County, Pamlico County schools, or Pamlico Community College. We have too many things that are positive for people to dwell on the negative," she said. -
