   Robert Belanger, Interlake regional director for the Manitoba Natural Resource Officers Association, said people tend to push the limits of safety every year. "People have a habit of following each other, whether it's right or wrong," he said. "Just because it's mid-December and there's 10 people on the ice, it doesn't mean it's safe to go out there." He said many people don't realize that a river's current can often erode ice from underneath. "People have to use common sense," he said. "Personally I'd bring an axe and check the thickness of the ice as I head out." He added that there is no governing body in Manitoba that will tell people when ice thickness levels are safe.

   The program is the brainchild of Robert Belanger, a Natural Resource officer with Manitoba Conservation and a native of Selkirk. Six years ago Belanger launched the program and it has been gathering steam ever since. "I was born and raised in Selkirk and I looked at all the garbage along the river for years," he said. "I'm happy to have been able to get the ball rolling to clean the river banks up." Currently the program patrols the riverbanks from Lockport to Lake Winnipeg. The goal is to keep the entire Red River Corridor, from Lake Winnipeg to Emerson, clean. "Corporate support and community participation is essential for the continued growth of this clean-up effort," said Belanger.
