  Biography: Jim Belanger practices criminal defense, government investigations, civil and commercial litigation, administrative law and white collar professional liability.His cases have included state and federal criminal matters, a six month antitrust and civil conspiracy trial, a $38 million consumer fraud action brought by the State of Arizona against a national bank, several grand jury and internal investigations, Chapter 11 proceedings, state and federal death penalty cases, state bar proceedings and various administrative and licensing hearings before agencies such as the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Arizona Board of Medical Examiners (BOMEX) and the Department of Financial Institutions (DFI).Mr. Belanger is also an adjunct Professor of Law at Arizona State University Sandra Day O'Connor College of Law where he teaches White Collar and Corporate Criminal Defense.Prior to joining the firm, he was a Partner in the Phoenix office of Lewis and Roca LLP, where he served as Chair of the Criminal Defense, Government Investigations and Corporate Compliance Group.

  Mr. Belanger is Chair of the firm's Criminal Defense, Government Investigations, and Corporate Compliance Group.He has tried several complex criminal, civil and administrative matters including a multi-million dollar consumer fraud case, one of the longest antitrust trials in Arizona state court history, and four first degree murder trials.He has also resolved several state and federal criminal and regulatory investigations on behalf of corporations and their management, has conducted numerous internal investigations for public and private entities, and has extensive bankruptcy and commercial litigation experience.Mr. Belanger advises clients on compliance and governance issues, represents lawyers in disciplinary proceedings before the State Bar of Arizona, and has appeared as special counsel for the state in matters involving the Department of Financial Institutions.

  Jim Belanger, president-elect of the Arizona Attorneys for Criminal Justice, said the "government often tries to take the position that one lawyer can't represent the entity and the individuals, but it's really a conflict determination that the lawyer and the client have to go through."Employers and employees involved in a criminal investigation could very well have differing interests, but there is "certainly nothing inappropriate" about the AG's counsel informing employees that they can be represented during if they want to during questioning, Belanger said.
