Elected to amfAR's board of trustees in March 2005, Harry Belafonte is known internationally for his accomplishments as an actor, singer, recording artist, and human rights advocate. He has served in numerous public service roles, including cultural adviser to the Peace Corps and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador. In 1985 Belafonte helped bring together 45 performers to record the benefit song "We Are the World." In 2000 he received the Ronald McDonald House Charities' Award of Excellence. He used the $100,000 honorarium from this award to establish the Harry and Julie Belafonte Fund for HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa. Mr. Belafonte also received the 1994 National Medal of Arts, and was honored by the Nuclear Age Peace Foundation for his work promoting peace. -
