Philip Bekker was born and raised in Rhodesia, studied in South Africa, and has been resided in Atlanta for 10 years. He is currently teaching photography at the Art Institute of Atlanta. In September 1993, Bekker received a grant from the Polaroid Corporation to use the 20 x 24 inch format Polaroid giant camera located in New York City. It is the same camera that William Wegman uses to make his now famous dog studies. Bekker's 30 new Polaroids are the basis for his current exhibition at Fay Gold Gallery. Using the Polaroid image, he transfers it onto watercolor paper and creates a photograph that has the rich quality of a watercolor etching or monoprint.

PHIL BEKKER grew up on a farm in Zimbabwe and studied photography in South Africa and England. These influences are translated indirectly into his choice of subject matter, but reflect strongly in the spareness of his treatment of the subject matter and use of color - earthy and rich, or bleached and constrasted. He has achieved international recognition as a photographer and for the past six years, has been a resident of Atlanta. Bekker currently teaches at the Atlanta Art Institute. -
