    MARILYN BEKER , Senior Screen Writing Professor in the School of Film and Television is passionate about story , meaning , self-expression and artistic intent. She believes that the best kind of teaching is personal , interactive , inspiring and challenging. She works one on one with her students to help them find their own creative voices. Currently , she's writing a book exploring the personal ethics of writing for film ( WRITING WITH A CONSCIENCE : Ethics for Screenwriters ) for Lawrence Erlbaum Associates. She's just completed her first novel ( LOST IN TIBET ) and is preparing a CD-based on her forthcoming collection of spoken word ( NGU Books ) THIS NARROW LEDGE ; REFLECTIONS ON MEMORY AND HISTORY. This collection draws from her roots as a poet and print journalist. She began her writing career while still in college , working as a news and entertainment reporter for the Toronto Star . After graduation she became Rock and Roll critic for the Globe and Mail and then , after graduate school , became feature writer and film critic for the Montreal Gazette. Her work there naturally evolved into creative work as a commentator , documentarian and comedienne for radio and then for television where she produced , directed and wrote documentaries , performed comedy and created wrote and performed in a PBS children's series. Always interested in inter-culturalism , she worked as a consultant in the Canadian Arctic encouraging Inuit and Dene artists to make films about their own cultures. Inspired by their work she began to write screen plays. Her first short film , HOME FREE , won international awards and led to a series of short films concerning immigrant and minority children. Since that series and her arrival in Los Angeles , she has written numerous feature-length screenplays , and a mini-series for Columbia Television. She has also adapted several books , worked as LA field producer/director for Fashion Television , seen on E! and in over 30 countries , as a segment producer for FNN's Appreciating Art and as a magazine writer , writing columns , humor articles and celebrity profiles for a number of international magazines. In 1994 She won a highly competitive grant from AAUW and wrote , produced and directed HOME GIRLS , a short film about inner city Latinas. From 1995-2000 she consulted with the Institute of Sound and Image at Catolica University in Oporto , Portugal helping to design a screen writing curriculum and holding graduate Master classes in screen writing and media ethics. Marilyn champions alternative and independent cinema and courageous original thought.
