   Afterward, Bek's parents, Jim and Ginny Bek, planted a sugar maple tree near the auditorium to honor their son.
   
   Mourners laughed and cried as they recalled stories about Bek, who worked in the information technology office at Greensboro College.
   
   Bek, 25, loved to cook. He studied culinary arts at Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte, where he received his associate's degree.
   
   While in Charlotte, Bek worked at The Fishmarket restaurant. Friends said he made lobster thermidor for Michael Jordan. He also cooked for former President Richard Nixon.
