The fine-pitch electrical connections from liquid crystal display (LCD) driver integrated circuits (ICs) to indium-tin oxide (ITO) traces on the surface of LCD screens are necessary for transmitting digital display logic and providing power connections. Notebook computer screens use thousands of these connections to make the display function. The density of these connections can be as fine as 200 conductors per inch and finer, and specialized equipment and process controls are required to make the connections reliable.
LCD screen manufacturers such as Sharp, Sony and Hitachi use anisotropic conducting film (ACF), an electrically conductive adhesive, as the bonding agent in the manufacture of their products. When the proper adhesive formulation is selected and bonded, electrical connection is only made between opposing traces, and no shorting will occur between adjacent traces.
