   Susana Bejar, a senior at Coral Reef Senior High School, is the Gold Medallion 2004 Hispanic Heritage Youth Awards Miami Regional Winner in Academic Excellence, sponsored by Chase and MasterCard International. Accepted at a host of top schools, including Yale, Duke, NYU, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Florida, Susana is a credit to her school and community. She is at the top of her class academically, editor-in-chief of IBIS Connections, her school's International Baccalaureate newspaper, which she has revived, adding an editorials page, internationally-themed articles, and multilingual writings, and president of the Key Club. She is also president of the Hispanic Heritage Club, through which she promotes and learns about her culture via song and dance presentations, ethnic fairs, and poetry competitions, and Vice President of Students Teaching about Holocaust Remembrance (STAHR). After struggling to come to terms with death in her family, Susana has worked to understand the ephemeral quality of human life: "I try to learn as if I will never die, as if my mind were an endless reservoir of knowledge that could never be filled up, and, in so doing, I catch a glimpse of that immortality which I so long for."
