Aldermanic Chairman Thomas Beirne Jr., R-5, said the budget process is in its infancy, and that there are several meetings upcoming with department heads, when members will look for possible reductions.
Beirne and Richetelli said that while there were a large number of residents who spoke about reducing the budget, there was also a good number that spoke about the need to preserve the education budget.

Beirne said the city is exploring new sources of revenue and, combined with an increase in state aid, he remains hopeful the tax rate can be reduced significantly.
He said he hopes all 15 aldermen will work together.
Smith has suggested that Richetelli and Republicans adopt a "zero-based budget," and last year he said department heads should be given the chance to make reductions on their own.
Alderwoman Kerri Rowland, D-4, said she met with department heads recently to discuss ways to trim their budgets.
