Miles Ellis Beirne ("Mickey") Murphy was born in Brisbane, the son of Sir Ellis Murphy, (qv 2) a Foundation Fellow of the RACP.

Miles attended St Columban's School, Brisbane, Downlands College, Toowoomba and spent two years at Xavier College, Melbourne, before entering the medical course at the University of Queensland.He graduated in 1955 and spent a year as an RMO at the Brisbane General (now Royal Brisbane) Hospital (RBH) and two years as a medical registrar.

Miles was appointed to the Brisbane General Hospital as a physician and remained on the staff until his retirement in 1998.He and Ruth were married for almost forty years, Ruth having a difficult last few months in a battle with cancer - a rare "scar" cancer of the lungs.

Miles was a keen sailor and inherited a love of the sea from his father.They competed in many Brisbane to Gladstone Yacht races, winning the race in 1957.He continued sailing Blue Nose until shortly before his death.
