   Plane crash takes Tom, Phyllis Bein

   Tom Bein, 77, a retired businessman and former longtime mayor of Berthoud, was piloting his single-engine Cessna 182 with his wife, Phyllis, 76, en route to Amarillo International Airport.

   They married in October after then-Phyllis Davis found Bein in an Internet search. The Colorado Flying Farmers club had named the Beins as its Couple of the Year on April 6.

   Bein radioed the Amarillo control tower at 9:46 a.m. for permission to drop to 600 feet to get below the cloud ceiling. He was flying by instruments.
   
   A minute later, as the plane headed toward the airport, it struck a pylon for a coal conveyor belt at an Xcel Energy plant. It broke apart about 180 feet up.
   
   No one was injured on the ground. A portion of the power plant was shut down for a time.

   Mayor Karspeck read a tribute to former Trustee and Mayor Tom Bein, who was killed in a plane crash on April 12, 2002 in Amarillo, Texas. On behalf of the Town, Mayor Karspeck extended sympathy to the Bein Family and acknowledged the debt of gratitude owed by the Town.
