"We're growing and we have an immediate need," Lockheed Martin spokeswoman Lisa Bien said Tuesday. "There were delays with Moorestown Township, and this was in the best interest of the company.

Lockheed Martin was to be the main tenant in an 800,000- square-foot office park the Toll Bros. developer wants to construct on Centerton Road.

But now, the aerospace and defense contractor has hired Whitesell Construction to build a complex for about 1,000 Lockheed employees. That facility - which also will be on Centerton Road, but across the township boundary in Mount Laurel - will open in early 2003, Bien said.

Toll Bros. representatives had warned Moorestown officials that Lockheed Martin needed office space as soon as possible.

"It's really regrettable that we were not able to act in a more timely fashion," Councilman Mike Sanyour said of Lockheed's decision to abandon the Toll Bros. project. "We didn't move as efficiently and effectively as we should have."

But the council on Monday did take two steps toward making the office complex and a related housing development a reality.

Even after the company builds its facility in Mount Laurel, Bien said, it will have about 2,500 employees in Moorestown.
