Janet Bein, formerly the Western Regional EAP consultant for Levi Strauss & Co., agreed. Employees, she observed, are more comfortable with saying that they are HIV-positive than they are with saying that they have a mental health problem. That discomfort also extends to managers and colleagues, remarked Danna Mauch, Ph.D., chief executive officer of Public Solutions, Magellan Health Services. People can not see or understand mental illness they way they do other illnesses, she said.

In addition, many employers are at odds over how to address sensitive problems related to mental health, like alcohol and drug abuse. We see the symptoms, but we do not know what to do as employers, Ms. Huggins said. What are we supposed to do? How are we to get training? Employers are also struggling with how to make required accommodations under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), which, many speakers agreed, needs to be clarified for employers.

Yet engaging the attention of employers on issues related to mental health is no simple matter, Ms. Bein observed. Timing is crucial : If a company is in the midst of a financial crisis, for example, it is not likely to begin focusing on the mental health of its employees. If anything, it is more likely to consider cutting back on mental health benefits. This is what happened at Levi Strauss, Ms. Bein's former employer. When the company found itself losing money, it looked for ways to cut costs. As a result, it decided to outsource its EAP, which had been in-house.

Ms. Bein described a series of lessons she has learned about how to approach employers on mental health :.

Know the company first. Learn what is going on in the company you are trying to educate before you approach human resources personnel and other corporate officials. If the mental health of the organization as a whole is not good, the company will probably not have the time or energy to devote to the mental health of its employees.

Be brief and to the point. Information presented to corporations must be concise. It must also be tailored to address the specific culture, climate, and needs of each company.
