CHILTON - Calumet County Sheriff Oscar Beilke announced Tuesday that he will retire at the end of his term Jan. 6.

Beilke, 57, made his retirement plans official during the County Board meeting, telling supervisors he will not seek re-election.

"It has been my pleasure working with you to serve the citizens of Calumet County," said Beilke, who has been sheriff for the last 5½ years.

He said he did not make the decision lightly. He has been in law enforcement more than 30 years, starting as a special deputy and bouncer in 18-year-old teen bars.

He served as a patrol officer for both the cities of Brillion and New Holstein before becoming a deputy with the sheriff's department.

"We've seen a lot of changes in law enforcement," Beilke said, adding that he is proud of "major improvements made in the quality of services" during his term as sheriff.

"I will continue to serve until the end of my term and look forward to working with the sheriff-elect to provide a smooth transition."

County Board Chairman Merlin Gentz praised Beilke.
