I just got a call from Robert Battle.Turns out we got a grant from the American Music Center to have live music for his upcoming New York season, and there's even enough left over for the company to commission a score from me. So, keep an eye on this space for updates on that!

Robert also told me about this new review of "Mass."

In other news... After much thought and writer's block, I've sort of abandoned The Alamo Polka.I couldn't come up with an intelligent way to mix cowboy music and polka without the piece becoming excessively jokey. (A friend also pointed out that he, not even being Texan, was somewhat offended by the title.)

Mr. Battle took the senior class along the same path.

The whole experience -- from the beginning of the collaboration with Robert Battle, through the rehearsals with the dancers, through the music rehearsals, through the closing performance today -- couldn't have gone better.
    ...
There had been some concern about the level of amplification we'd be using in the performances this weekend. (Long story short, Robert Battle and I want it loud, and the Juilliard administration wants it to sound "more natural.")

Choreographer Robert Battle cites Monk as a formative influence, especially in what he calls a "deconstructive" approach to melody and rhythm. What he heard in Monk was a process of taking apart essential aspects of a piece of music and sticking them back together again, casting the familiar flow of notes askew through the use of suspenseful pauses and tempos that lingered and crashed."He had a way of turning the thing upside down and shaking it a little bit," says Battle, whose Battleworks Dance Company's Monk Movements, a program of short pieces devised especially for Duke, reflects that sensibility.

    Choreographed by Robert Battle.

This work was my first collaboration with choreographer Robert Battle.Robert's request was for a short, dark, rhythmic, angry piece, and this was the result. It was great fun to write, although I failed to consider that whatever rhythms I wrote would have to be learned not only by the musicians, but by the dancer. (Robert's choreography is extremely musical, and nearly every movement matches the music.) This piece is a short, exhausting virtuosic trip for both the solo clarinet and the solo dancer. If you listen closely to the very end of the live recording, you'll actually hear the dancer gasp her last breath before collapsing to the floor.Robert is pretty dramatic. This work was used by the United States Synchronized Swim Team this year at The Olympics in Athens.
