While, SHL, a major provider of psychometric instruments, currently runs 70 sites for organisations involved in on-line recruitment and development, their R&D Director, Dave Bartram, advocates a more cautious approach.Apart from security and confidentiality issues, Bartram singles out the limitations of the technology itself.Controlling the timing of delivery, a way of ensuring that the system does not fail when someone is halfway through a test and consistency in both appearance and functionality for users are still the biggest concerns.
In order to counter the potential negative effects, it is essential to have a rigorous management control of the whole assessment process, ensuring feedback is of high quality and reflects good practice. Also, the results of the test should be further verified through interviews and other elements of the traditional selection process.
The International Testing Commission is already considering a classification and accreditation scheme that all publishers could adopt and which would provide an indication of the qualities of an instrument.
