AARON BARTLETT, Mid-America Regional Council, stated it was a pleasure to be present this evening to present Shawnee with this Bicycle-Friendly Community designation.He stated this award is presented by the League of America Bicyclists through their Bicycle-Friendly Community award.He stated this award recognizes that the City of Shawnee enthusiastically supports active communities through bicycle-friendly roads, education programs, public encouragement, and traffic safety enforcement.He stated the City of Shawnee serves as a model for other communities within the region through it's commitment to both on-road and off-road bicycle facilities.He stated that each year, the City of Shawnee holds a bicycle rodeo where it teaches young people and their parents critical bicycle safety skills.He stated he knows from first-hand experience that this award is not an easy one to achieve and is simply not handed out to just any city that applies for it.He stated 43 cities applied this year and only 14 cities received the award.He stated the City of Shawnee is one among six other communities that received the Bronze Award and that is a designation and distinction the City of Shawnee should be proud of.He stated the Mid-America Regional Council wants to thank the City of Shawnee for their commitment to better bicycling, reducing traffic congestion, improving air quality, and enhancing the public health of their citizens.
Councilmember Thomas recognized Councilmember Segale and stated he was the reason the City received this award.
