Its main benefit is reducing the onset of coronary heart disease (CHD), says nutritionist and principal scientist with Quaker Oats Company, Dr Sandra Bartholmey, who was in Kuala Lumpur recently to give a talk to the National Heart Institute and Malaysian National Heart Association on the goodness of oats.
She says the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the health claims of oats in 1997 which made it the first food-specific health claims ever approved by the agency. The FDA approval read: "Soluble fibre from oatmeal, as part of a low saturated fat, low cholesterol diet, may reduce the risk of heart disease."
Bartholmey was quick to add that "oats are not the magic potion" and their efficacy is in conjunction with a healthy lifestyle.
According to the 1999 World Health Organisation statistics, cardiovascular diseases contributed to a third of global deaths. Low and middle income countries (the category under which Malaysia falls) had 78% of deaths caused by cardiovascular diseases.
CHD is caused by multiple factors and the major risk factors include high blood cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, obesity and diabetes.
