"At the amateur level, you get points for touching an opponent and it's much more controlled, so you have far fewer people having concussions at lower levels of boxing," said Jeffrey Barth, chief of medical psychology at the University of Virginia.

Jeffrey T. Barth, neuropsychologist, opened with a joke.

"I realized I shouldn't come in here and tell you how your kids are brain-damaged," he said. "Maybe I could tell you about your brain damage - from hitting your head against the wall."

"Oh, those kids!" remarks aside, local parents took a look behind the cliches involving adolescence Thursday night, as Barth and other medical and counseling professionals addressed teens' growth and development.

The series of panel discussions on mental health, sex and substance abuse grew from some parents' worries about their children, particularly after a group of Charlottesville High School students attacked University of Virginia students.

The problem arises from the slow development of the brain, Barth said. The frontal lobe, which influences judgment and critical thinking, develops last, generally finishing by the age of 25.

"There are good reasons we don't give kids all the decision-making responsibilities at an early age," said Barth, a University of Virginia Medical School faculty member. "If you don't have judgment, you don't have judgment about your judgment."
