Bartelt works hard to overcome the distance factor and connect with her students.
"Building a relationship with the student is just as, if not more, important than in a face-to-face situation," she said.

"It is important to treat it like a traditional course and plan time to work on it," said Bartelt, the Phelps teacher.
One thing she emphasizes with her students: They have to speak up when they're confused or struggling.
"Being a virtual teacher, I cannot see the frustration on the students' faces," Bartelt said.
