Joseph Bartel Appointed Vice President of Contracts for Cubic Defense Systems

San Diego, CA., April 6, 1999 -- Joseph (Joe) Bartel, former director of strategic relationships, has been named vice president of contracts for Cubic Defense Systems (CDS) Inc., it was announced today by Bruce Roberts, president and chief executive officer of Cubic Defense Systems, a subsidiary of San Diego-based Cubic Corporation (AMEX:CUB).

After earning his Bachelor's of Science in Business Administration from Stonehill College in 1960, Mr. Bartel served his country in the US Navy.He retired from the Navy as a Captain in the Supply Corps in 1989.He retired from his position as Vice President from Cubic Defense Applications, Inc. in 2005 and from his service to the San Diego Diocese as Director of Secondary Education in 2006.

Before joining Cubic in 1996, Bartel worked as director of contract administration for Avondale Shipyard and was manager of procurement at General Dynamics' Convair Division in San Diego.

He retired from the U.S. Navy in 1989 as a captain with responsibility for the Navy's Regional Contracting Center, San Diego.

Bartel is a native of Taunton, Mass. and earned a bachelor's degree in business administration from Stonehill College, North Easton, Mass., and a master's degree in financial management from Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif.

He and his wife, Janet, have five children.
