Gail Barsky, a singles coach who works mostly with 45- to 60-year-olds, has noticed a strength and preparedness in many of them that belies ideas of frailty.

"They are actually happy," says Barsky, based in Newtown Square, Pa. "And once they re-enter, they're not as upset as the stereotypes would have you think.
