Joe Barry was appointed to the fourteenth RTÉ Authority by Síle de Valera, Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands, taking office on Thursday 1 June 2000, for a period of five years.

Joe Barry was born in Cork in 1932.A native of Dunmanway Co.Cork he attended primary and secondary schools in the local area.Having finished school he furthered his education by attending the College of Technology Cork, the Irish Management Institute and the Institute of Public Administration.

He has been in broadcasting since 1956 when he joined Radio Éireann studio operations from his previous position with Civil Service Telecommunications.He was appointed Head of Outside Broadcasts in 1985 and was involved in the development of the RTÉ television studios and the training of operational staff for the new service.

Joe was involved in most of RTÉ's major television outside broadcasts during this time.

Mr Barry is currently a Governor of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Mr. Barry is married and has four children; one daughter and three sons.

Through the course of the year two gatherings of media executives were held, one in Belfast to honour Mr. A.D. Fleck, past chairman of the committee, and one in Dublin, to honour Mr. Joe Barry, retiring Director General of RTE.
