"Being a one-stop shop enables us to maintain margins and keep our transaction fees low, because I've eliminated the middleman," Barry said."A typical processor doesn't have the same relationships with merchants. We got profitable through our direct-to-merchant services, and now we can build on that with this new wholesale product that we can sell to banks through the Visa network."

Barry noted that The Gap has seen bad debt on checks fall to less than 1 percent since the program began in June.

While much of the excitement at ECHO revolves around the Visa check program, Barry said he has no intention of allowing the debit and credit card processing business to flounder.

"We are best served by having two solid lines of business," he said."That's what I tell Wall Street. The worst we can grow is 20 to 25 percent a year.

The best could be 50 to 100 percent."

Barry has begun beefing up ECHO's sales and marketing staff to start selling the program to banks and major retailers.

"We're a great technology company, but if we've failed anywhere, it's been in our marketing -- we have to do a better job of selling ourselves," said Barry, a former Orange County investment banker who in 1986 joined the company as board chairman when the company went public. He became chief financial officer in 1987 and CEO in 1991.

ECHO next week plans to finish relocating its corporate headquarters from Agoura Hills to the Paseo Camarillo complex in Camarillo. The company employs 211 people and also has operations in Albuquerque, N.M.

"It's going to be great having all of us in the same building again," said Barry, noting that the company has had processing and customer service staff spread around the Conejo Valley in rented facilities for some time.
