Saying farewell Jim Barry surrounded by some of his pupils from Cornelius Vermuyden School
A RESPECTED deputy headteacher is retiring after nearly 30 years at a Canvey school.
Jim Barry has been teaching at Cornelius Vermuyden for 29 years, rising through the ranks to deputy head where he is in charge of the pastoral care of pupils.
He completed his teacher training at Manchester University, working for three years at Stretford Boys' Grammar in the city before moving for another three years to Northfleet School for Boys' in Kent.He then moved Cornelius Vermuyden as the second in charge of the English department.
Mr Barry, 57, said: "It has been fantastic.

Mr Barry, originally from Belfast, will be retiring to southern Ireland with his wife Moira, who has worked at the school for 22 years in the art and learning support department.
Zoe Cartright, 34, a parent governor and ex-pupil of Mr Barry's, said: "He didn't feel his job had to end with a fuss, but there has never been a bad word said about him.
