Marvin A. Barrios
...
Marvin Barrios was born on March 3, 1987 in Los Angeles, California.
He began schooling at age of four, and then was enrolled in Spanish classes until his second grade in elementary school.
When he was eight years old, Marvin and his family moved to their present home in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Since he had been taught only Spanish in school, Marvin knew very little English when he arrived in Las Vegas.
He suffered language barriers while in school but his persistence helped him learn the language quickly as if he had barely arrived from a native Spanish-speaking country.
This led Marvin to have an accent that distinguishes him, which he takes as a compliment.
During early schooling in Las Vegas, Marvin cared very little about school.
In eighth grade, he got back on track after learning of a magnet school he wanted to attend very much, the Advanced Technologies Academy in Las Vegas, Nevada.
He received straight "A"s while in eighth grade and also was a member of seven clubs, two in which he was elected president.
These clubs led Marvin to travel to places like Europe, where he was inspired to write his books.
Marvin Barrios arrived from his European tour in June of 2001 in San Jose, California.
Here is where Marvin-after viewing the ocean and thinking of Titanic-was inspired to write a movie about a future Titanic, that is, the world's largest ship in the future.
However, writing a movie seemed impossible to Marvin.
He felt that the movie world wouldn't accept a movie from a 14-year-old.
As he thought about the process, he left Las Vegas, Nevada for a 5-week stay in Los Angeles.
After visiting the beaches every week, he knew he had to do something with his idea.
Marvin started attending his new high school, the Advanced Technologies Academy in August of 2001.
Keeping the idea in mind, current events would postpone Marvin from sharing his idea to the world.
In March of 2002, Marvin decided to write a book instead of a screenplay.
The novel, called Floating Cities was a mixture of Titanic, the future, and Marvin's own creations.
The book would also allow Marvin enough space to expand his creativity, though editors would downsize the book later on.
In July of 2002, Marvin completed his manuscript.
The 750-page book was ready for editing.
By September, Marvin had edited his entire book and was ready to pursue agents around the nation.
However, going back to school would delay things, and the summer was over.
Marvin postponed his entire project by a few months.
In January of 2003, Marvin reedited his book for the first time, downsizing the majority of it to 500 pages.
In March, he sent a one-page query letter to 32 different agents.
Disappointedly, he received 30 rejections, and never heard from two other agents.
By this time, Marvin was about to give up; when he thought of something he had always wanted to do, open his own business.
Books plus business meant a publishing house, and that is how he decided to start a publishing house called ClubMarvin Books.
In April of 2003, Marvin was given the green light from his parents, plus a $1,500 investment from them.
Marvin immediately began the pre-press process.
His first editor edited his book that month.
After final editing, the book was 395 pages long.
The release date of September 26 was scheduled, and Marvin was ready to release his first book.
But first, he would take the rest of May off to complete his school year.
He would finalize the book over the summer.
Two nights after completing the school year in June, Marvin decided to write a quick press release about himself.
Marvin sent the press release to a few journalists.
Two days after, Marvin received a call from a journalist of The Las Vegas Review-Journal.
That very same day, Marvin was interviewed for the first time.
On the Sunday edition of the newspaper, Marvin made headlines on the front cover, and took the front cover of the "B" section of the newspaper.
The surprises wouldn't end there.
Marvin received an email and telephone call from Mark Fleming, a prospective agent that wanted to sign him to publish his book.
...
Marvin from this point forward began sending a few more press releases to see if his "miracle" press release would target any more media.
After several long meetings, Marvin signed with Mark Fleming to publish his book, this time under a company owned by Mark Fleming called Multichannel Solutions LLC/Empala Press.
...
Two weeks later, Marvin received a call from Vanessa Hauc, a reporter and anchor of the famous international Spanish news magazine, Al Rojo Vivo con MarĂa Celeste of Telemundo Network.
...
The show wanted to interview and feature Marvin during one of their segments.
Marvin was more than ecstatic.
In July of that year, while in his parent's native country of El Salvador, Marvin was featured on the show.
In October, another Telemundo national broadcast occurred with the Telemundo National Newscast, Noticiero Telemundo.
Marvin Barrios book was released November 1, 2003 in the United States, Canada, and the United Kingdom.
His book has been selling very well, particularly in the West Coast of the United Sates.
Since then, Marvin continued to work on his book.
He is currently translating a Spanish version of the book, and is working on his second book.
Barrios is scheduled release the original version of Floating Cities in late 2004.
Now 17 years old, Marvin is not only involved with the publishing world but also the movie and television world.
He wrote the screenplay of the movie, Floating Cities, which is scheduled to open in theaters in early 2006.
Marvin has also written and produced a Spanish talk show and is currently pursuing possible distributors.
