    Post Comment

(October 24, 2007) - Mike Barker knew he wanted to represent the people after reading Profiles in Courage in seventh grade. As a Monroe County legislator, he seems to do it well for the villages of Fairport and East Rochester, as well as part of the town of Perinton.

Barker, a social studies teacher at Johanna Perrin Middle School, is the Democrat and Chronicle's choice for re-election in the 11th District.

Barker, a Republican, said he wants to act as an ombudsmen for the county, village, town and school district.Considering that most of the calls he receives are not directly related to the county, it's a much-needed role.

One prominent leader in the district told this page that Barker has the pulse of the district, is active on a variety of committees and has been an advocate for towns and villages in regard to the F.A.I.R. plan.Barker was also characterized as someone unafraid to speak up regardless of the politics involved.
    ...
Yet Barker is the stronger, more experienced candidate.

Barker served on the Perinton Town Board prior to his legislative appointment in 2004 and is a former trustee for Fairport. He now serves on the public safety committee and the planning and economic development committee in the County Legislature.

Barker deserves to be re-elected for a four-year term to continue gaining momentum on the strong leadership he's already exhibited.
    ...
I like Mike and also think the county legislators are qualified people.
    ...
As long as people like Mike Barker remain in office he will continue to be the Boss.

"Barker deserves to be re-elected for a four-year term to continue gaining momentum on the strong leadership he's already exhibited."
    ...
If Mike Barker truly wanted to be a courageous leader, like the people in his favorite book, he would have stood against the F.A.I.R plan.

Barker, 41, however, is a proven community leader.

Now that Barker has a few months of county legislature experience under his belt, he should become a more vocal opponent of the harmful partisanship he criticized during his endorsement interview.A social studies teacher at Johanna Perrin Middle School in Fairport, Barker has said that partisan bickering he's witnessed in the county legislature reminds him of middle school antics.

With many veteran legislators leaving next year because of term limits, there is an excellent opportunity for new cooperation.Barker deserves another year to prove himself to be an independent leader who can help foster it.
