LONGMONT, Colo. -- Upper School science teacher and experiential education director Melissa Barker won the category (cat) 3 race, and finished second overall (cat 1-2-3), at the 21st annual Longmont Criterium Classic which doubled as the Colorado State Criterium Championships, here on July 15.
Her finish in the 60-minute timed race over a .7-mile L-shaped course, was the best of her 2007 racing season and the points earned lifts her from cat 3 to cat 2 for the remainder of the season.
...
Ms. Barker began racing in 1992 as a way to train for her alpine skiing at Holderness (N.H.) School in the off season. She continued to race while earning her undergraduate degree at Middlebury before taking a decade off from competition.
She returned to the competitive side of the sport just a year ago and after just half a season of racing at the category four level, earned enough points to compete at cat three, where she has competed this season.
Admittedly a pretty quick upgrade in competition, less than a year later she's improved to racing at cat 2 following the state championships, a climb that on average can take several years to accomplish.
Ms. Barker has a several races left on the 2007 slate, including July 29 at the Salida Omnium and Aug. 3 at the Federal Center in Denver. She will also be racing closer to home on Aug. 26th at the Niwot Criterium.
