Judge Barblett was Deputy Chief Justice of the Family Court of Australia (1988-1998), Chairman of the Family Law Council, Chairman of the National Legal Aid Advisory Committee (1978-1992), Inaugural Judge of the Family Court of Western Australia (1976-1998), and Australian Olympic Representative (Hockey) in 1956.He is well acquainted with university governance from his experience as chairman of the WAIT Council (1976-1985).

His seniority, independence and gravitas are the outcomes of a long and distinguished career in public and professional roles.

This led to the appointment of Deputy Chief Justice, Alan Barblett, of the Australian Family Court as drafter of the Bill.
