    John Bannon "Plein Air Landscapes in Oils"

    This hands-on instructional workshop with John Bannon, former teaching assistant at the Louvre for twelve years, will be held at suitable landscape locations with daily critique at the end of each painting day.In the event of inclement weather painting exercises will take place in the studio.Topics covered will include painting materials, equipment, techniques, and aesthetic goals.Participants should be in good physical condition and fully capable of hiking, carrying own gear and traversing hilly and uneven terrain.

    John Bannon holds a BFA from the Maryland Institute of Art as well as a MFA from the University of Pennsylvania in the history and practice of painting.For twelve years he was the protégé of M. Jacques Maroger, former technical director of the Louvre laboratories, and expert in the drawing and painting techniques of the old masters.John assisted in teaching artistic anatomy and in reconstruction of the lost painting formulas of the Renaissance and Baroque masters.A member of the Oil Painters of America, he has presented forty-two solo exhibits and has taught art for more than fifty years in the United States and abroad.His works are included in the permanent collections at the Pennsylvania Academy, Philadelphia, PA", The Pentagon, Washington, DC., The Superior Court, Washington, DC., and the Dan Daniel Distribution Center, Newport News, VA, the Corcoran Gallery, Washington, DC to name a few.

    John Bannon is a distinguished Washington-area painter and contemporary realist who has exhibited for more than 40 years in the United States and abroad.His vibrant portraits, still lifes, land and city scapes are housed in permanent museum collections as well as in the Hall of Chiefs of Staff, the Pentagon, the Art Collection of the Supreme Court, in Washington, D.C.; the St. George Association in New York; the Pennsylvania Academy of Art; and many other public and private collections.

    Born in 1933 in Baltimore, Bannon studied at the Maryland Institute of Art, beginning at age eight under the tutelage of Anne Didusch Schuler and others.

    As a result of this association, in the 1960s, Bannon co-founded and exhibited in The Six Realists Gallery, in Baltimore, which received wide acclaim for its then-defiant stand for traditional art.The American Artist Magazine article (June 1998), "The Baltimore Realists," features Bannon's work among other key representational artists.

    Bannon has exhibited in more than 25 galleries and presented over 36 solo exhibits throughout his career.A member of the Oil Painters of America, he has won the Henry Walters Prize, as well as awards from the Maryland Institute of Art, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, the Pennsylvania Academy, the Easton Academy of Art, and others.Very recently, the Washington County Museum in Maryland acquired one of his works for their permanent collection.

    JOHN BANNON BFA Maryland Inst.of Art; MFA Univ. of Pennsylvania; student , protege, and assistant to Jacques Maroger.Now a retired professor, he has for forty-plus years taught drawing, painting, and History and Appreciation of Art.During the same years, his professional painting career has kept pace and he has garnered many prizes and pestigious commissions.He has been represented in 28 galleries and presented 39 solo exhibitions.His works are included in the museum collections of: The Pennsylvania Academy of Art; The Corcoran Gallery of Art; The Pentagon, Washington, D.C.; The Washington County Museum of Fine Art; and many other important public and private collections.

    Bannon teaches two or three annual workshops which emphasize traditional methods, with a hands on approach and demonstrations.As one of the few original students of Jacques Maroger, he is much sought after for his knowledge of old master techniques and the famous Maroger oil mediums.A member of Oil Painters of America, John Bannon now specializes in plein air landscape which he paints in oils, pastel, and watercolor.

    A special note from Susan Webster: John Bannon is a well known and popular artist and teacher in the Washington D.C. Area.I took two semesters of drawing with him some years ago at a local college.His approach was classical, we studied anatomy and worked from plaster casts, skeletons, and models.I cannot tell you how much he helped me improve my skills in portraiture and figure drawing.Consider taking this workshop tour if you like to work realistically plein air - you will enjoy working with John!
