James Ball, a child life specialist at Loma Linda, said the system provides a diversion for hospitalized children.

"It helps children forget why they are in the hospital," he said."Because it is an intranet system, people from the outside cannot get in.It is safe."

Each playroom in acute care areas at Loma Linda has a computer.

A second phase of Starbright World at the hospital will see the system accessible in all patients' rooms, Ball said.

"That's for those (patients) who cannot come to the playroom, especially post-surgery patients or those in isolation," he said."We can now bring this to them."

"I've known him since he was five years old," says James Ball, child life specialist, child life services."My favorite thing to do with him is to read to him.I usually read in Spanish, and just to hear him giggle at my accent is the greatest thing.It's infectious."One place that Miguel loves to go to at the hospital is the playroom.His favorite game at the moment is Super Smash Brothers and always challenges the hospital staff to a game of it."He got better, and now I can't beat him," admits Ball.
