DOWNEY -- The owners of the historic Ball Mansion, the home once owned by local pioneer and agriculture luminary Al Ball, is currently undergoing extensive remodeling efforts that will increase the house's total square footage, city officials said this week.

According to state and county records, the house was built in 1920 for Downey resident Al Ball, part owner of the Ball and Tweedy Packing Company.At one time, it was considered one of Downey's most elaborately-built homes.

The mansion was entered into the state of California's Historic Resources Inventory in 1977 on behalf of the Natural History Museum.

According to "The History of Downey, California" by Charles Russell Quinn, in addition to his agriculture packing company, Ball was also a board officer with the Los Nietos Valley Bank during World War I, which advertised with the slogan "Remember us when you have money, and we will remember you when you have none."

If you've driven down Cherokee Drive the past few weeks, you may have noticed construction at the old Ball Mansion, the former home of Downey pioneer Al Ball.
