ATLANTA - Cathy Baldwin-Johnson , M.D. , a practicing family physician from Wasilla , Alaska , has been named the 2002 American Academy of Family Physicians Family Physician of the Year.She was selected by her peers and celebrated by all attending the AAFP Congress of Delegates this week in Atlanta.
Baldwin-Johnson has delivered quality and compassionate care to the people of Alaska for more than 17 years.She is a respected and loved member of the community and is a role model for other physicians.In Wasilla , Baldwin-Johnson founded The Children's Place , an agency with the mission of giving children who have been victims of physical or sexual abuse a place to be heard…a place to be helped..In coordination with the program director , Baldwin-Johnson has led the agency to be one of the most significant resources in the community and is a model for child advocacy programs in Alaska.
Baldwin-Johnson was named the 2001 Alaska Family Physician of the Year.She serves as the volunteer medical director for The Children's Place , and the Valley Sexual Assault Response Team in Alaska.She also holds a position with the Alaska Statewide Children's Advocacy Center Working Group.Since 1987 she has been a clinical instructor for the University of Washington.
In 1999 , Baldwin-Johnson received the Alaska First Lady's Award for outstanding volunteerism.This award is presented to a few select Alaskans who go above and beyond to volunteer their time to their community or special efforts around the state.The mayor of Wasilla wrote : Alaska is a better state for having Dr. Baldwin-Johnson as our Alaska Family Physician of the Year.Her sincere love for the profession , her patients and the community deserve the highest honor..
Baldwin-Johnson received her undergraduate degree at Arizona State University in Tempe , and earned her medical degree at the University of Washington School of Medicine , Seattle in 1980.She completed her family practice residency with the Swedish Hospital Family Practice Residency Program in 1983.She is a board-certified family physician.# # #
