Board Welcomes Foundation's Youth Activisim Council Member Thania Balcorta
9/12/2006Washington, D.C. , The American Legacy Foundation®, the nation's largest public health foundation dedicated to preventing teens from smoking and providing resources to smokers who want to quit, announced the appointment of Thania Balcorta to serve as Youth Board Liaison to its Board of Directors.Balcorta, 18, from Davis, Calif., is currently a freshman at University of California, Davis, where she is pursuing a bachelor's degree in Community and Regional Development.
Balcorta has demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership in tobacco-control initiatives in her community and nationally.Her fight against tobacco began in eighth grade.Now, she is the president of her local youth coalition, YUFA STAR -Youth United for Action Showing Tobacco Ain't Right and she is a council member for Friday Night Live, an alcohol and tobacco prevention organization, at both the county and state level.
"Thania has been an active member of the foundation's youth programs and through her past accomplishments, has dedicated herself to tobacco control," said Chairman of the American Legacy Foundation's Board of Directors, Vermont Attorney General William H. Sorrell.

Balcorta, who is currently serving her third year on YAC, will now also serve as Youth Board Liaison for an 18-month term.

Balcorta has testified before city councils throughout her county on increased tobacco sales policies and enforcement, and she also led a successful campaign to make her county fair smoke-free.She continues to lead an ongoing initiative to enforce smoke-free policies in her hometown of Davis and has successfully helped pass ordinances prohibiting smoking within twenty-five feet of playgrounds in Woodland and Winters, California.Because of her work, she has received national attention from publications such as CosmoGIRL! and Time Magazine for Kids.
