Dr. Balazs was an Emeritus Professor of Electrical Engineering at the Virginia Military Institute retiring in 1999 after a distinguished 33 year teaching career.He joined the VMI Faculty in 1966 having earned his Ph.D. from the Pennsylvania State University a year earlier.As director of the Institute's first computer center and a teacher in the Department of Electrical Engineering, he led VMI into the age of the computer.Col.Balazs was appointed department head of Electrical Engineering in 1996, and in April 1997, he was awarded the Jamison-Payne Institute Professorship in Electrical Engineering.A registered Professional Engineer since 1976, he was a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers and the Association of Engineering Educators.He collected local weather data for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and donated his computer expertise to the Rockbridge Regional Library He was a past director for the Rockbridge Red Cross Chapter Blood Drive, was a volunteer tax counselor for AARP Tax Aid Program, volunteered with Rockbridge Group of Self Help for Hard of Hearing.Dr. Balazs was currently serving as Treasurer of the Rockbridge Area Conservation Council.Dr. Balazs is survived by two sons, Gabriel Bryan Balazs of Livermore, Calif., Eliot Loren Balazs of Lexington; and two brothers, Robert Balazs of Hampton and Loren Balazs of Babylon, N.Y.
