Bill Baker, vice president of Durrant Architects, asks that the company be allowed to complete its contract for the new police building.

Bill Baker, vice president of Durrant Architects, said at Monday's work session he will personally oversee the completion of the project, and that the current $32 million cost estimate for the building is as solid an estimate as the company can provide.
Baker apologized for a series of estimates that increased with each presentation and took council by surprise.
"The last estimate we made (before the $32 million) was a mistake," Baker said, adding that the architect who summarized the costs left some items off the list.
"I know that shook your confidence, but the number, as it stands now, is the project cost estimate and we stand by that," he said.

While council has held off completing its contract with Durrant, Baker said the company is continuing to do what work it can to stay on its original schedule.
"I apologize for the mistakes made early on; I can see there have been some misunderstandings," Baker said.
