BIRMINGHAM -- The Vatican announced the appointment Tuesday of Bishop Robert J. Baker of Charleston, S.C., as the new bishop for north Alabama, a region that includes the Eternal Word Television Network, an influential Roman Catholic broadcasting operation.
Baker, who has met EWTN founder Mother Angelica and visited her convent north of Birmingham, said he has great respect for the way the network's TV and radio services reach out to people of other faiths from its base in the South, an area that is predominantly Protestant.
"To me, that's on target for the South, and I think the rest of the country would benefit from it," said Baker, who served in South Carolina for eight years and is originally from Ohio.
Baker said the church in Alabama should continue reaching out to the state's Spanish-speaking immigrants, many of whom are Catholics from Latin American counties.

Baker replaces Bishop David E. Foley, who retired in 2005 after 11 years but has remained in the position as an administrator until a successor could be named.

The appointment was delayed in part by the death of Pope John Paul II and his replacement by Pope Benedict XVI, who selected Baker for the post.
The 39 counties included in the Birmingham diocese have about 86,500 Catholic residents, which is less than half of the 176,300 Catholics in South Carolina.
Baker said he accepted the transfer to a smaller area out of faithfulness and because he wanted to remain in the South.
"It's not a numbers games, it's a matter of sharing the message of Christ," he said.
Baker will continue to serve the Diocese of Charleston until October, when he is installed as Bishop of Birmingham.
