    Ed Baker, a professor of kinesiology and wellness, has served the Athletic Department in a variety of roles during his 31-year career at Chesapeake College.

    Baker was head men's basketball coach from 1971 to 1979, guiding the Skipjacks to a school-record 21 wins during the 1973-74 season, and also served as assistant baseball coach from 1971 to 1973.Baker, at Athletic Director Frank Szymanski's request, provides both formal and informal academic and personal advising for Chesapeake's student/athletes and oversees the college's weight room.

    "Dr. Baker is a great resource for our students, and he's a great resource for me, too," Szymanski said."He has a lot of experience working in and around the Athletic Department, and I feel fortunate I can take advantage of his expertise."

    Baker teaches a weight-training course recommended to student/athletes, and provides all interested students with orientation sessions on how to properly use the weight room.He believes student/athletes can greatly increase their athletic performance with an appropriate weight-training program.

    "If someone works hard, he or she can increase strength and performance 100% in a year.That happens on a regular basis," Baker said."If you achieve those kind of results, you can compete at a much higher level."

    Baker teaches fitness and wellness and stress management courses in addition to weight training.He resides in Ridgely with his wife, Bonnie, who is media specialist at Ridgely Elementary School.He and Bonnie have two daughters - Jodi, a second-year student in Chesapeake College's nursing program; and Jill, who works in Baltimore in the area of economic development.

    Chesapeake College Professor Ed Baker, who was one of the Hall of Fame's 10 original inductees, also praised this year's selections.

    "Mercedes and Debbie are exactly the type of individuals who belong in this Hall of Fame," said Dr. Baker, who served on this year's Hall of Fame Selection Committee.
