The company introduced its reimaging program in 2002 to make restaurants more contemporary, said Brad Baker, who is Northwest region construction manager for McDonald's Corp.
"We want to deliver the quick service. But we don't want people to feel like they have to eat in 30 seconds and run out the door," said Baker, who is based in Kirkland."We're trying to elevate the experience to one of comfort and relaxation."
In Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Montana and Idaho, he said, about 100 restaurants out of 584 have undergone makeovers.
In the Pacific Northwest, the program started last year. The company, he added, will match independent franchise owners between about $50,000 to $100,000 for upgrades.

"We just listened a lot to our customers," said Baker, who added that a large number of 18- to 34- year-olds visit McDonald's restaurants.

Baker declined to discuss details about sales in the new-look restaurants. But sales in those establishments are doing well, he added.
The program is voluntary among the company's franchisees; some independent owners might like the classic company look and the feel of their restaurants, he said.
