"Schools seem to be focused so much on college-bound students that they're steering kids to jobs that are not in construction," said A. Graham Bailey, a recently retired administrator with the Federal Highway Administration in Albany.
One of the goals on Wednesday and today to show that working in construction is more sophisticated than just digging ditches.
Electricians and masons brought motors and trowels for students to try.Construction companies brought more than $4 million in equipment, much of it with keys in the ignition and ready for the students to run.
"It's heavily insured," said Garland Sweeney, who was co-chairman of the event with Bailey and is in charge of the equal opportunity office in the state Department of Transportation.

"Get younger kids thinking construction is not a dead-end career," Bailey said.
