HEART OF CONFUCIUS - [Cached Version]

    Archie J. Bahm

    ...
What Professor Archie J. Bahm offers in this invaluable book is not a literal translation but a lively, systematic interpretation of the two most basic Confucian classics.Writing for the thinking, inquiring layman rather than for the scholar and Orientalist, he at last makes Confucianism meaningful to the West.

He is to be congratulated for the success he has achieved in presenting a crucial phase of Confucian thought to the naturalistically tempered Western mind. With an unusual clearness of thought and expression, he demonstrates that the Confucian mode of thought, developed over two thousand years ago, can still enlighten the modern world in its search for ways of living peacefully and prosperously together. He also effectively explodes the myth that Confucianism is per se a conservative, reactionary weapon of the Establishment, when in actuality it has as much meaning for the modern revolutionary as for the powers that be.

My favored translation is by Archie Bahm, former professor of philosophy and sinology at UNM. Tao or Dao: a holistic concept without adequate translation.Variously associated with Jaweh, God, Brahman, Allah, Logos, The Absolute, The Oversoul, Cosmic Libido, Creative Principle, Divine Intelligence or simply Nature...... Teh or De: implies simple, intelligent, power, the ability to keep within limits, self sufficiency, the ability to refrain from meddling, to achieve without effort; the power to be natural or, of anything to follow its own nature.Teh is the ability of Tao to act naturally and be itself. King or Jing or Ching: book. The spirit of Taoism demands a vigorous and wholehearted devotion to the truth rather than to secular affairs if these conflict with that devotion.Hence many Taoist masters have been accused of laziness or unwillingness to assume civil responsibilities. Although prayer, rituals, alchemy, magic, politics, strategy and the like are associated with Taoist practice, its real contribution is to the inner life of humans. We must first know ourselves before we can understand the world.

Bahm, Ph.D., offers a fresh translation of this Chinese classic. For those who wish to compare this translation with others he includes a fine bibliography of recent translations, and translations from the beginning of the 1900's.Dr. Bahm also provides his own commentary of the principles of the Tao, and biographical information on Lao Tzu (as much as can be known and conjectured).

    ...
Dr. Bahm asserts in this volume that comparative philosophy seeks to achieve some "minimum of a world philosphy to which all can subscribe" and which "serves as an essential instrument for the understanding of human survival."Therefore, he defines what he means by comparative philosophy, its standards, values, history, subject matter and methodology.

Through comparison of the three diffferent world views he hypotheses a "Universal Agreements" conclusion. He examines what are the likenesses in these views rather than focusing on differences.Dr. Bahm discusses the notions of good, bad, truth, falsity, identity, will, reason, and the void.
