"Fund raising can be difficult, but making a kid's dream come true is the greatest thing in the world to do," said Cynthia Baca, director of development for the Make-A-Wish Foundation.
The not-for-profit organization grants wishes for children between the ages of 2 1/2 and 18 years old, who have been diagnosed with a life-threatening illness.Trips to Disney World and Disney Land are the most popular wishes requested, but the organization has fulfilled a variety of desires from pianos and computers, to realizing one little boy's dream of becoming a state police officer for a day.
All of the funding for the program comes from private donations, gifts-in-kind, and events held on behalf of the organization.
Outside influences can make a tough job even tougher.

"We have a policy that we do not solicit people by phone, the Internet or by going door-to-door," said Baca."If anyone gets approached that way, it's bogus."
Baca said the group is always in need of donations and volunteers.
In the Four Corners area, she said the Best Western Inn and Suites Four States Senior Open Golf Tournament an annual Farmington event has been particularly successful in raising money for the foundation, she said. The competition has raised over $17,000 in the past two years, and all of it designated exclusively for granting the wishes of children in San Juan County.

"It doesn't matter what the size of the gift is, as long as we can make the wishes happen," said Baca.
