State Board of Education member Christine Baca resigned Friday morning after being charged with stealing more than $34,000 from her former employer, the Bank of Denver.
Denver prosecutors say the theft occurred over several years.Baca, 37, was fired by the bank, where she was a commercial and real-estate loan manager, in August when the alleged scam was discovered by bank investigators.
Ed Gruninger, an investigator for the Denver district attorney's office, said Baca admitted the thefts to bank supervisors and to investigators from the DA's office.

At a later meeting with bank officials Sept. 21, Baca acknowledged the extent of the scam and "apologized and said she would have to live with this for the rest of her life," Gruninger said in an arrest- warrant affidavit.

Karen Gerwitz, director of board relations for the state Board of Education, said Friday that Baca hadn't notified the board of the investigation or her dismissal from the bank.

"I have enjoyed my public service these past two years and have appreciated the opportunity to work on behalf of Colorado's children," Baca said in the letter.
The board issued a statement saying it was "with shock and regret" that it was announcing Baca had been charged.
Investigators allege Baca used her work computer to transfer money into accounts she could get into in order to withdraw money.
Baca told authorities she began stealing from the bank because of family problems in May 2002 that prohibited her from paying her bills.
The district attorney's office said the total theft was $44,290, of which Baca has repaid $8,386.She is charged with one count of theft and one count of computer crime.Baca voluntarily surrendered to authorities Friday morning and was released on a personal-recognizance bond.
As a member of the state board, Baca represented the 7th Congressional District. Her replacement will be named by a committee and will serve until the next regular election.
