Since Per Scholas was established, it has distributed about 35,000 computers, not only to schools, but to families as well, said Plinio Ayala, the group's president and chief executive. The group charges families $195 for a computer, which comes loaded with an operating system and software; the price also includes a monitor, keyboard and speakers, though not a printer.
About 80,000 other computers that have been provided by government agencies and individuals, in addition to private companies, have been found unsuitable for upgrading, Mr. Ayala said.
Such computers are first processed at the group's quarters in disposal machinery that separates metal, plastic and other materials and removes the mercury, he said.
